Election Cookies

Posted by Anne Yorks on Sunday, March 20, 2011

One of my favorite games to play with my little girl is "Name that Cookie Cutter". I order cookie cutters on a regular basis, and as soon as my little cutie sees a package in our mailbox, she knows it's time to play. Some cutters are tougher to guess than others, but she always has an idea.

Do you want to play too? This is a cookie cutter that arrived yesterday. Can you guess what it is? Feel free to leave your guess in the comments area below. I will reveal the cutter's true identity on my next blog post.

A few weeks ago, I received an order for a set of 'Judgey' cookies. My client requested scales of justice, gavels, democratic donkeys, and stars. This was a fun order to work on, especially the scales of justice. They were my favorite from the bunch.

I wanted to make the donkeys as clean looking as possible so that I would not have to outline the cookie. I thought the outline would take away from the design. So I made my icing a tad thicker and flooded the icing over the outside line as much as possible with out over-flowing. I did the red first and let it dry completely, then I went back and did the blue. I was pleased with the end result.

Jonathan Grine is a local candidate for Centre County Judge. So I added his name to the gavel cookie.

The star cookies needed a little sizzle. I did the white icing first and once it dried when back and added the blue/red with a generous dose of rainbow disco dust.

I used a #1 and #2 tip to make the scales of justice cookie. I always get nervous flooding tiny areas. Sometimes those areas tend to crack. I was happy that the gray areas stayed intact.

Finally, Have you tried this? This is an egg waffle. Apparently they are very popular on the streets of Hong Kong. Topher got an egg waffle iron from Williams Sonoma for his birthday. We tried it out this morning and LOVED IT!! It tastes like a funnel cake / waffle hybrid. This time we sprinkled it with a little sugar, but next time we are planned to serve it up with some fresh sweet juicy strawberries. Oh Yum!!

Have a sweet day,

Anne

Disco dust is plastic craft glitter. It’s not edible and should not be used on food.

Edible glitter is made from gum arabic, sanding sugar, or gelatin.

Amy Skinner – I think I am doing something wrong bsuacee I am not having great results with this recipe and I am certain it is my fault since so many others have had such success. My problem is that the cookies seem to be very dry (IMO) and I have tried three times now to try and correct it, I upped the extract to 1 1/2 tsp each, totaling three tsp., I roll them out with powdered sugar so as not to have too much flour and only rolling the minimum amount so as not to be too thin or too tough I can’t think of any other reason why they would be so dry! They do stay nice and are soft while keeping their shape enough to put royal icing on!December 17, 2009 11:39 pm[]Annie Reply:December 18th, 2009 at 12:50 amHi Amy,Wow, sorry you’re having such trouble! My best guess would be maybe you are measuring your flour on the heavy/dense side. Maybe try spooning it into your measuring cup rather than scooping it. I don’t think the extracts would make enough of a difference either way, and I use quite a bit of flour every time I roll mine out, so I don’t think that should cause problems either. Good luck![]Amy Skinner Reply:December 18th, 2009 at 4:40 pmThanks for the response, I measure my flour by volume on a scale so I am not sure that is the problem. It is probably just me, and it still tastes fine nonetheless Just have to have a glass of milk with it []
