Birds, Owls and Geese oh my!

Whenever I see cute birdie cookies, I think of one of my favorite songs. Bob Marley's 'Three Little Birds'.

Rise up this mornin',
Smiled with the risin' sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin', ("This is my message to you-ou-ou:")

Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."
Singin': "Don't worry (don't worry) 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

And, now I'll have it in my head for the rest of the day.

Bird cookies are some of the most fun cookies to make. They come in all colors and patterns.

This particular order was for a new mom and dad, a 'welcome home from the hospital' gift. The baby's nursery is the Hayley collection from Pottery Barn Kids. So I used bright colors and patterns to give the birds a cheery look.

Around the same time, I received another order of bird cookies, geese actually.

The customer asked for both Canadian and White geese. She told me her husband was returning from being away for a year and their inside joke was geese. She specifically asked for the Canadian and White geese and also asked for one to have spread open wings.

For some reason, this order made me nervous. I had never attempted geese before. I looked a tons of photos of real geese trying to put together my plan of attack.

For the Canadian geese. I used two shades of brown to get the coloring just right.

I didn't want the white geese to be too white, so I added some gray highlight to give them a little detail. I think it worked.

I had a little bit of leftover dough, so I asked the customer if she wanted me to make some 'silly geese' and we could add a few talk bubbles. She loved the idea and decided her silly geese would be saying:

"The flock welcomes you home!"

"Welcome back to the nest!"

"Goose [heart] Gander"

Who knew geese could be so cute and endearing?

Thanks for reading and have a sweet day,
